Webasto Diesel Heaters
My biggest suggestion for winter van travel is investing in a Webasto Air Top heater. You may not think you need one because it is warm enough most of the year in Southern California. But if you van travel to cold climates in the winter, the day will come when you wake up and it is 15 degrees inside your van...and you will be wishing you had that heater! These heaters are not only crucial for keeping you warm, they are great for controlling moisture levels in your van to keep your gear dry. Webasto heaters are a highly effective and efficient way to heat your van. The 12V diesel model only burns one gallon of fuel every 24 hours at 90 degrees.
Webasto makes Air Top heaters for diesel and gasoline vehicles. We typically work on Diesel Sprinters, so we usually install the Webasto STC 2000 model. There is also a gas model for gas-powered vehicles.
The Air Top STC 2000 heater works up to 5000 feet in elevation. If you plan on spending extended periods of time above 5000 feet, you will want to have your heater adjusted for higher elevations by your installer OR purchase the Webasto EVO 40 model. The EVO 40 model works up to 15,000 feet in elevation.
